Police officer hit by car in Edinburgh's Cowgate where traffic is banned during summer

A police officer has been hit by a car in an Edinburgh street where traffic is banned at night during the summer months.

The officer, in his fifties, was knocked down by a Vauxhall Corsa while attempting to stop the vehicle on Cowgate in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics.

A 21-year-old man has been charged in connection with the incident and was due at Edinburgh Sheriff Court yesterday.

As part of the Edinburgh 'Summertime Streets' initiative, a number of city streets including Cowgate are closed between 7pm and 5am until September 1.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "A 21-year-old man was arrested and charged and was due at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Monday, August 12, after a male officer, in his fifties, was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa which officers attempted to stop in the Cowgate area around 3.20am on Saturday, August 10.

"The officer sustained minor injuries and was treated by paramedics."
