Police officer hit by car after stopping vehicle in London

Police closed the road in Tottenham after the incident, which left a firearms officer in hospital ( PA )

An armed police officer has been hit by a car after pulling over a suspect vehicle in London.

The unnamed officer has been taken to hospital and their condition was not life-threatening.

The Metropolitan Police said officers stopped a vehicle in White Hart Lane, Tottenham, shortly after 11.30am on Tuesday.

“The suspect vehicle stopped for police, but then drove off at speed striking an officer,” a spokesperson added.

“The officer has been taken to hospital.”

There have been no arrests and inquiries continue.

It was the latest of several incidents where police officers have been hit by cars in Britain.

In August, a man hijacked a police car and ran over an officer who had stopped him in Birmingham.

Mubashar Hussain was jailed for 12 years for numerous offences earlier this month, while PC Gareth Phillips has undergone several rounds of surgery.

Days later, PC Andrew Harper was killed by a vehicle while investigating a reported burglary in Berkshire.

Last month, two police officers were hit by a car in Sussex, and days later another officer was mown down as he attempted to pull over a vehicle in Coventry.

The alleged attacks came amid concerns over rising violence against police officers in England and Wales.
