A police officer had to be cut free by firemen after getting his hands stuck in handcuffs during a demonstration.

Sergeant Scott Renwick, of Northamptonshire Police, was showing new recruits how to use the restraints when the incident occurred.

Sgt Renwick is the core training officer for the force.

Northamptonshire Fire Service tweeted about the incident.

Sgt Renwick responded to the fire service's tweet, outing himself as the officer involved.

"Well that wasn’t a good start to the day," he said.

"Thanks to @northantsfire for cutting me out of some broken cuffs. #NotFunny. I would have laughed too!!"

The officer joked that he did not just owe the fire service a cake, but an entire "cake factory".

"This could well make my career," he added.
