TAK: A police officer from a special operations unit was found hanged in a hotel in the northern border town of Mae Sot on Sunday morning. He was believed to have taken his own life.

A housekeeper found the body of a man, wearing a pair of sports shorts and a purple T-shirt, hanged from a railing over a staircase between the second and third floor of the hotel, in the centre of Mae Sot town near the shrine of King Taksin the Great.

Forensic police examined the body and found no visible wounds. In Room No.306 on the third floor, where the man was staying, police found two beer bottles, two glasses, a motorcycle key, a mobile phone and a wallet containing an identity card belonging to Pol Lt Veerayos Peekaew, 56, a member of a special operations unit of Provincial Police Region 6.

There was no evidence of a struggle.

Police were investigating the cause of the death, although it was initially believed the officer had committed suicide.
