Nether Lane, Ecclesfield, Sheffield ( Google )

A police officer has died after crashing his motorbike during a pursuit in Sheffield.

The 40-year-old was responding to reports a silver BMW had failed to stop for other officers when he collided with a Toyota Avenis in the city’s Ecclesfield area.

He was pronounced dead a short time after the smash at 1pm on Tuesday.

The driver of the Toyota, a 59-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Reacting to the news, home secretary Priti Patel tweeted: “The saddest news. Deeply tragic and my thoughts are with the family of this distinguished officer.”

South Yorkshire Police posted a short a tribute on Twitter.

“One of our officers died whilst on duty in Sheffield,” it read. “It is with great sadness that we issue the following statement about his death.”

In the statement, itself, the force added: “Our specialist officers are supporting the officer’s family and the driver of the Avensis.”

It asked for any witnesses to the collision, in Nether Lane, to contact the force on 101.
