Police officer could face criminal charges after pensioner dies in crash

A file has been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to the case of a police officer whose unmarked BMW police car struck and killed a pensioner while he crossed the road.

Leslie Wakefield, 80, was hit by the vehicle as he crossed Warrington Road in Warrington at around 7.30pm on February 3, 2020.

Mr Wakefield, who lived nearby, died at the scene.

A cordon was erected at a number of junctions near the scene of the crash, which happened close to the Sportsmans Arms pub.

The fatal accident was referred by Cheshire Police to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), who automatically enquire into all deaths involving officers.

The driver of the unmarked police car was later placed on restricted duties amid ongoing enquiries into potential gross misconduct.

The IOPC have now concluded their investigation into the accident and sent a file to the Crown Prosecution Service and a copy of their report to Cheshire Police.

An IOPC spokesman said to the ECHO : “Our investigation into the incident in which Leslie Wakefield was killed after being hit by an unmarked police car in Penketh concluded in January this year.

“We have passed our report to Cheshire Police to consider, and have also referred a file to the Crown Prosecution Service to consider any criminal charges in relation to the driver of the unmarked police car – we will consider issuing our findings when proceedings are concluded.
