Police officer claimed woman raped him to avoid paying child support

A police officer has been fired after falsely claiming he was raped by a woman he impregnated to avoid paying child support.

Samuel Sheppard, a six-year veteran of Denver police force in the US, was dismissed for fabricating a sexual assault by the unnamed woman and lying to internal affairs about the nature of their relationship.

An order signed by Denver’s deputy director of public safety, Mary Dulacki, said: “The evidence presented is that officer Sheppard made an unfounded sexual assault claim against the complainant seemingly to avoid or limit his financial obligations.”

Sheppard fathered a child in October 2017. In April 2018, he reported to police he had been sexually assaulted and that had led to the pregnancy.

The woman’s lawyer gave investigators texts showing the couple had an ongoing intimate relationship.
