Police officer charged over deadly crash at Canberra intersection

An ACT Policing officer who was involved in a fatal crash has been charged over the death and suspended from the force.

The officer was responding to a life-threatening incident on May 4 when he allegedly crashed into another car at the intersection of Baldwin Drive and Maribyrnong Avenue in Kaleen.

A woman who was injured in the crash was given first aid by the officer, but later died of her injuries.

The officer also sustained injuries in the crash.

The officer was charged with culpable driving causing death after ACT Policing's crash investigation team and the AFP's professional standards unit launched an investigation.

"This is a tragic incident and I continue to offer my deepest condolences to all affected," Chief Police Officer Justine Saunders said.

In a statement, ACT Policing said it would be inappropriate to make further comments since the matter was now the subject of criminal prosecution.

The death was the sixth on ACT roads this year.
