Police officer attacked after being called to illegal early-hours house party in Stockport

A police officer was attacked after being called to an illegal early-hours house party in Stockport.

Cops were called to reports of a breach of coronavirus restrictions at a house on Gloucester Avenue, Marple, at around 1.30am on Friday.

An officer was assaulted.

She was taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw, but her injuries were not as serious as initially thought, a GMP spokesman said.

A 49-year-old woman was has now been arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

She remains in custody for questioning.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "At around 1.30am on Friday 21 August 2020, police were called to reports of a breach of Covid-19 restrictions at a residential property on Gloucester Avenue, Stockport.

"Officers attended and, upon arrival, an officer was assaulted.

"The officer was taken to hospital. Thankfully, her injuries are not as serious as initially thought.

"A 49-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

"She remains in police custody for questioning."

The party was one of 40 illegal house parties police were called out to last night.

Bosses at GMP said they are dealing with around 2000 extra calls a week about people failing to follow the coronavirus lockdown regulations.

Current social distancing restrictions in place for the region ban people from different households mixing in homes or gardens.

But Assistant Chief Constable Nick Bailey Bailey said people are 'frustrated' with the rules, leading to them flouting the restrictions.

Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, he said the breach-related calls are placing a 'huge demand' on the force's resources.
