Police officer assaulted after being called out to seaside promenade

A Welsh police officer was allegedly assaulted after being called out to investigate a gathering of people on off road bikes.

The officer was assaulted near Tywyn Promenade in north Wales on Friday night and sustained injuries.

The initial call-out had been about a number of individuals congregating near the prom to the rear of the Golden Sands Caravan Park after 7pm, North Wales Police said.

The force said the officer was assaulted at the scene. They added it was not fair for officers to accept being assaulted as "part of the job".

Detective Sergeant Taylor-Jones said: "We come to work to serve and protect the public - every day we deal with very difficult and challenging situations, putting ourselves in harm’s way to uphold the law and protect the public.

"We must be able to carry out our duties as safely as possible - being assaulted is not and should never be regarded as ‘part of the job’.

"We’d appeal to members of the community to come forward with any information they may have about this incident."

A spokesperson for the force added: "An officer was called to reports of a number of individuals on off road bikes congregated around Towyn Prom, to the rear of Golden Sands Caravan Park last night (Friday, October 1). It is thought they were present at the location between 7pm and 9pm. The officer was assaulted at the scene and has sustained injuries."

Anyone with information should call 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously via 0500 555 111, quoting reference number 21000683402.
