Police officer allegedly makes joke she needs a 'holiday so much she'd go away with the McCanns'

A police officer allegedly wrote a Facebook post mocking the parents of missing Madeleine McCann, prompting an investigation by Avon and Somerset Constabulary.

The comment was posted on a Facebook page belonging to PC Paula Manos, a beat manager in Thornbury.

The post read: "I need a holiday so much I'd be willing to go away with the McCanns at this point."

This week, German prosecutors announced a major breakthrough in the McCann case, saying they believe Madeleine is dead and they had a new prime suspect - a 43-year-old German prisoner.

The three-year-old vanished during a family getaway in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007.

The comment was posted on the 48-year-old's Facebook page back in March 23, the day the UK's coronavirus lockdown was announced.

The force has said it does not condone the 'sentiments' expressed in the post and added it will be looking further into it.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "We have a clear policy on what's expected of all our officers and staff in relation to responsible professional and personal use of social media.

"This policy is guided by the shared values which are expressed in the Code of Ethics and the standards which reflect public expectation on how those in policing should behave.

"Our Professional Standards Department have been made aware of the post and will be looking into them further.

"While we're not able to comment further at this stage, we would like to make clear that we do not condone in any way the sentiments expressed in the posts."
