A serving police officer has died in an off-duty motorbike crash.

Luke Van De Sande, from north Staffordshire, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash after his motorcycle left the road.

The incident happened in Cold Meece, near Stone, at about 11.10am on Tuesday.

Staffordshire Police said the officer was riding his orange KTM motorcycle towards Cold Meece on Swynnerton Road and that no other vehicle was involved.

The force said in a statement: "Despite medical efforts sadly Luke was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Luke was a serving police officer and was off-duty at the time of the collision.

"Specialist officers are supporting his family at this difficult time, who have asked for privacy whilst they come to terms with his tragic death."

Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the motorcycle in the area is asked to call 101.
