Police negotiators in 17-hour stand-off with man on Neath rooftop armed with 'sharp object'

A suspect has been arrested after a man spent 17 hours on a rooftop armed with a "sharp object".

Police were called at 7.30pm on Monday to reports of damage in progress at the former Caewern Respite Centre in Dwr-Y-Felin Road, Neath .

Officers saw a man and chased him, at which point he is said to have climbed onto the roof of the building.

Police said the man then started to threaten to harm himself, and was armed with a sharp object.

Force negotiators, the police helicopter and other units helped out at the scene.

During the protest NPAS St Athan tweeted that the force helicopter had been at an incident in the Caewern area involving a person on a roof.

It added: "We apologise for the prolonged aircraft noise during the night."

Tracey Olszewski Raddon commented on Facebook: "It's been flying there for two hours. Fire engines and police cars all over Caewern and Waunceirch. Looking for someone."

The respite care home was closed around four years ago.

Police said the man came down from the roof at 12.30pm today.

A suspect was later arrested and remains in police custody.
