Police name suspect after shocking scenes of violence at Haydock Park race meeting

A man suspected of being involved in a mass brawl captured on video at Haydock Park racecourse can today be named.

Shocking video emerged of the ugly scenes which erupted during the William Hill Grand National Trial meeting.

The video, viewed thousands of times since being posted on social media, shows a running battle with dozens of men throwing punches at each other in front of horrified onlookers on Saturday, February 16.

Although brief, the scrap shows white-shirted thugs punching and kicking a man who has fallen to the ground.

At the end of the video footage, a woman carrying a small child who was caught up in the middle of the trouble can be seen being led away by course stewards.

Today Merseyside Police confirmed they have charged a man for his alleged part in the incident.

A police spokesman told the ECHO: "Following enquiries, 26-year-old Mason Nield of Elmbank Road, Middleton was arrested and has now been charged with affray and possession of a class A controlled drug (cocaine)."

Nield is due before Liverpool magistrates on Tuesday, August 27.

More Haydock Park footage

The scenes emerged just days after a ban on all horse racing was lifted following an outbreak of equine flu.

At the time Haydock Park racecourse officials stressed they were working with police and took "a zero tolerance position on antisocial behaviour".

A spokesman said "the perpetrators were ejected at the time".
