Police name suspect after man with fake gun sparks armed response

A man suspected of brandishing a gas powered BB gun in the streets prompting a major armed response has been named by police.

Police confirmed they sent armed officers to Birkenhead soon after reports "a man was brandishing a firearm in the street" around 7.30am on Thursday.

Residents said up to 12 police vehicles including armed officers were seen descending on the area after witnesses said the man was wandering around Laird Street , Hoylake Road, Mercer Road and Lansdowne Road clearly holding a gun.

Other sightings included close to McColl's convenience store in Laird Street.

Officers responded quickly and detained a man shortly after, along with a gas powered BB gun.

Today police confirmed a 25-year-old man has now been charged over the incident.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "Daniel Rowlands from Lansdowne Road was charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence; and possession of an imitation firearm in a public place."

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court this morning, Friday, February 28.
