Police name man killed in A1 crash near Belford as Bahati Masuka

A driver who died in an early morning crash on the A1 in Northumberland has been named.

Shortly after 1.45am on Monday, police were called to a collision between a car and a van on the A1 near Belford.

It was reported that a Nissan Qashqai was travelling northbound when it crashed with a Vauxhall Vivaro van travelling southbound.

Emergency services attended but a 45-year-old man, who was the driver of the Nissan Qashqai, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have named the man as Bahati Masuka, from Musselburgh, Scotland.

The 52-year-old driver of the van was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle with serious injuries. 

The road was closed in both directions between South Charlton and Belford for more than six hours while an investigation took place, before reopening just before 9am.

Sergeant Ray Lowery, of Northumbria Police ’s motor patrols department, said: "This was a very serious incident which has resulted in the tragic death of one man and another seriously injured.

"We have specialist officers supporting Bahati’s family during this very difficult time.

"We would continue to ask anyone who witnessed the collision to get in touch with police, especially if you have any useful dash-cam footage."

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 1.41am from police requesting for us to attend a serious road traffic collision on the A1 at Chathill between a car and a van.

“We sent one ambulance, one Hazardous Area Response Team, an officer and a doctor and transported one patient to the major trauma centre at the RVI with serious injuries.”
