Police name man charged with terrorism and 'extreme' porn offences

A man suspected of terrorism offences and possessing 'extreme' pornographic images has been named by police.

Mason Yates of Elstreet Court, Widnes, was arrested by officers following a warrant at his address on Friday, January 8.

The 18-year-old has since been charged with two counts of possession of a document or record likely to be useful to a person preparing, or committing, an act of terrorism, contrary to section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

He has also been charged with possession of an extreme pornographic image.

He appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday and will next appear at Central Criminal Court on Friday, November 19.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Every year thousands of reports from the public help police tackle the terrorist threat.

"If you see or hear something that doesn’t seem right, trust your instincts and ACT by reporting to police in confidence at gov.uk/ACT.

"Reporting won’t ruin lives, but it could save them. Action Counters Terrorism. Remember, in an emergency, always dial 999."
