Police name Bristol Grammar School pupil who died on school trip to New York

American police have named the Bristol Grammar School pupil who died last week in Manhattan as Anastasia Uglow.

New York Police Department (NYPD) told Bristol Live it had identified the 17-year-old Redland girl and informed her family of her death.

Anastasia died last Thursday morning (December 19) after in Midtown Manhattan.

The sixth form student is said to have been found unconscious at the hotel before being taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

It is understood there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Anastasia had been on a trip to New York with Bristol Grammar School, which is based on University Road in Clifton.

An NYPD spokesman said last night (December 23): “The Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause of death and the investigation is ongoing.”



A UK Foreign Office spokesman said: We are in touch with US authorities and providing support to the family.”

Bristol Grammar School has informed teachers and pupils of Anastasia's death.

The school's statement reads: "It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death in New York of one of our sixth form pupils, which occurred on Thursday, December 19, while they were on a school trip.

"We are all devastated by the news and our thoughts are with their family and friends during this extremely difficult time.  

"Our pupils, their parents and our staff have been informed and we are providing support to all those who have been affected by this news. 

"We have opened a book of condolence and we will consider further remembrance with the family’s support in the New Year. 

"We would ask the media to respect the privacy of the family and our community while we grieve."
