A teenager who died after going missing in the River Tees has been named as Anas El-Rafai.
The 15-year-old, from Darlington, was last seen shortly after 5pm on Monday after getting into difficulty in the river at Broken Scar.
Durham Constabulary launched a search but his body was found nearby shortly before midnight.
Formal identification was carried out this afternoon.
In a statement, his parents said: “Anas was a fit and healthy young man. He was very popular at school.
“We are devastated and miss him so much.”
His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
