Police will be conducting a more mobile operation across the Hunter for New Year's Eve due to the lack of large events and potential increase of backyard parties.
Newcastle City Police commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said police normally had a heavy presence on the foreshore, but as that event has been cancelled this year, those police would be tasked to various other areas.
"We'll have the the same amount of cops, but they'll be more mobile," he said.

Superintendent Humphrey said police would still be conducting foot patrols through licensed premises, with COVID-19 compliance and road safety being two other big focus areas.
Port Stephens Hunter Police commander Superintendent Chad Gillies said he anticipated more house parties this year due to restrictions.
"My message to those people is to do so responsibly by ensuring you comply with the current public health orders and respect social distancing and your neighbours," Superintendent Gillies said.
