Dec. 21--A 22-year-old man was shot to death and a woman was wounded in northwest Indiana Sunday evening after police say the pair tried to rob two people who allegedly fired gunshots in self-defense, authorities said.
The incident happened around 7 p.m. in the 3500 block of West 20th Avenue in Gary, according to a statement from the Gary Police Department.
Police said two males, whose ages were not immediately available, were in the area, buying an item, when the 22-year-old man and a woman attempted to rob them.
The two males fired a weapon at the two suspects and called the police, according to the statement.
The 22-year-old man, identified as Brandon Johnson, suffered several gunshot wounds, according to police and the Lake County coroner's office.
Johnson, of the 3700 block of West 21st Place in Gary, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8 p.m., according to the coroner's office. His death was ruled a homicide.
The woman, whose exact age was not immediately available, fled the shooting scene and was able to get to a hospital, according to Gary police.
The woman's condition was not immediately known, but she was placed into custody late Sunday evening, said Lt. Thomas Pawlak, a spokesman for the Gary Police Department.
Charges were pending against her early Monday.
No other information about the incident was immediately available.
