Police make two arrests after cyclist, 49, is killed in County Durham crash

A 49-year-old cyclist has died following a crash in County Durham.

The male cyclist was taken to James Cook Hospital, in Middlesbough, after sustaining serious injuries but later died.

Police have arrested two people and launched an appeal for witnesses or dash cam footage following Friday's incident.

Cleveland Police said the cyclist was involved in a collision involving two cars - a black Audi TT and a white Ford Fiesta.

It occurred at around 4.10pm on the A689 eastbound between Wynyard and Sedgefield.

Prior to the collision the white Ford Fiesta and the black Audi TT vehicles were sighted leaving the A1 so police are also requesting any information on the vehicles prior to 4.10pm.

A 22-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of driving offences and are assisting police with their enquiries.

Police are appealing for anyone who may be able to assist to contact Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit on 101, reference 119601.
