Police find body of man after firefighters tackle blaze at shop in Eccles

A body was discovered by police after firefighters rushed to tackle a blaze at a convenience store.

Firefighters were called to a blaze at the Go Local Extra, formerly Costcutter, in Liverpool Road in Eccles at around 8am on Tuesday morning.

The fire was small, according to firefighters who responded, and no one is believed to have been injured.

But when police arrived to check over the building and look in on nearby residents, they happened upon a tragic discovery.

Officers made their way inside a flat above the shop and found the body of man, understood to have been deceased for some time.

Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and have confirmed the man did not die as a result of the fire. The finding was, police say, a sad coincidence of attending the fire.

There are also believed to be no suspicious circumstances around the cause of the fire itself, say police.

Police were at the scene throughout they day and cordoned off the property as they carried out enquiries.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "Police were called by the fire service shortly after 8am this morning (Tuesday 14 July 2020) to a report that the body of a man had been found at a property on Liverpool Road, Eccles.

"Officers attended and sadly found the body of a man.
"There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire.
"A scene remains in place at the property."
