Police make driver change bald tyre in front of them after he 'didn't bother' the first time

Police officers made the driver of a VW Polo change his bald tyre in front of them after he was caught driving around just a day after he was warned.

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit stopped the Volkswagen, which had a tyre cord exposed, in Shirebrook on Monday, May 4.

Despite warning the driver and making an agreement that he would change the tyre, he was found again by police on Tuesday, May 5 driving with the same bald tyre.

Officers offered him a choice and he was required to change it on the spot in front of officers or face having his car seized.

DRPU added: "Polo stopped yesterday with a cord exposed on the tyre. Moved to car park on the agreement driver would change it. Didn't bother and found driving it again today.

"Total of six points and £200 fine."

The legal tyre tread depth for cars in the UK and Europe is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.

A 20p coin can be used to test the tread depth.

When inserting the coin into the tread grooves, you should not be able to see the outer-band section of the coin.

If you can, it's illegal.
