Police investigating the death of a female cyclist following a hit-and-run collision with a moped rider in a cycle lane have made arrests.
The woman, in her 50s, is believed to have been riding in the part-segregated cycleway on King Street in Hammersmith when the collision occurred, at around 5.30pm on Friday, August 22.
She suffered critical injuries and died at the scene, adjacent to the Pret-a-Manger in Lyric Square, despite the intervention of paramedics and medics from London’s Air Ambulance.
The Standard understands that several moped riders had entered the cycle lane, probably to cut through traffic, and were racing and possibly involved in a feud.
The cyclist’s name has not been made public. Her family are being supported by specially-trained officers.
She is the sixth person to die cycling in London in 2025. She had no connection to the moped, or powered-scooter, riders and was tragically in the “wrong place at the wrong time”, The Standard was told.
Shortly after the incident, the Met police said the moped rider involved in the collision had fled the scene on foot, and efforts were being made to trace those involved.
Asked by The Standard for an update on the case, Scotland Yard said in a statement this week: “Around 17:40hrs on Friday, 22 August, officers attended King Street, Hammersmith, following reports of a collision between a moped and a bicycle in the cycle lane.
“The cyclist, a woman in her 50s, was found with critical injuries. Despite the efforts of paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next-of-kin are being supported by specially-trained officers.
“Arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
“Anybody who witnessed the incident, or who has information, should call 101, quoting CAD 5782/22AUG.”

The cycle lane, known as Cycleway 9, is part of Transport for London’s wider cycle network. It is a two-way lane and runs along the north side of King Street, between the Hammersmith gyratory and Chiswick.
It is only part-segregated, with plastic wands being used in the section adjacent to where the collision occurred.
London Cycling Campaign has raised concerns about the cycleway being used by delivery riders, including those on mopeds.
However the rider involved in the fatal crash was not a delivery rider, it is understood.

London Cycling Campaign chief executive Tom Fyans, in a letter to Hammersmith and Fulham council, said the incident was a “stark reminder of the critical need for immediate and decisive action to address the safety of cyclists” using Cycleway 9.
He said: “It is a concerning trend that motorbike and moped riders frequently use the cycle lane on King Street to circumvent traffic or make deliveries.
“This includes some riding across Lyric Square. These practices endanger those cycling as well as walking and wheeling and undermine the very purpose of active travel initiatives.”
Mr Fyans said the “downgrading” of kerb stones to plastic wands had made it easier for moped riders to access the cycleway.
