Police make arrest after man seen carrying a 'machete type knife' in Newry

A man has been arrested in Co Down after police received a reports of a male with a 'machete type knife'.

It happened in the Clanrye area of Newry in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A PSNI Facebook statement said: "Police responded to the area and began searching for this male.

"After further calls from concerned residents in the Meadows/Derrybeg area, a male was quickly located with a weapon and arrested for numerous offences.

"He is now in police custody. Many thanks to those who acted quickly and called us, it prevented people being seriously injured. We appreciate all your help."

Meanwhile, Detectives are appealing for witnesses after a man was shot in both legs in a house in West Belfast on Wednesday night when a child was present.  

The shooting at the property in the Hazel Glen area was reported to police just before 8pm.

PSNI say it was reported that two masked males forced their way into the property and fired a number of shots at the man in the hallway. He remains in hospital this morning where he's being treated for his wounds.
