Police looking for 'Peter Beardsley lookalike' in old Liverpool shirt

Police searching for a suspected thief have issued a picture of a man and some people have taken to social media to point out he looks a bit like-Reds star Peter Beardsley.

The man, who definitely isn't the former England striker, was captured on CCTV in Morrisons in Lincolnshire wearing an old Liverpool shirt.

Two bank cards from a lost wallet were used to make contactless payments at the store in Stamford on September 30.

After Lincolnshire Police issued the image, social media users poked fun at the suspect, saying he looks like the Beardsley, Leeds Live reports.

Beardsley played for Liverpool FC from 1987 to 1991, scoring 46 goals for the club before moving to Everton FC in 1991 to 1993 where he netted 25 goals for The Toffies.

Others said the man looked like Blakey from On The Buses.

Writing on Facebook, Arthur Rogers joked: “Peter Beardsley must have fallen on hard times.

“Maybe he’d picked up Ian Rush’s wallet and thought he owed him a few quid from back in the day!”

A police spokesman said: "We are investigating an incident of theft by finding along with a subsequent incident of fraud.

"We believe a wallet was found on September 30 at Morrisons on Uffington Road in Stamford.

"The cards were then used to make two contactless purchases.

"We could like to speak to the man pictured in connection with the incident."

This isn't the first time a well-known face has been compared to a CCTV still.

One issued by Blackpool Police and the other posted on the Twitter feed of David Schwimmer, of an alleged thief in Blackpool (left) bearing a resemblance to Friends star Schwimmer, who posted a parody video of himself (right) in a New York store. (PA)

Friends star David Schwimmer was caught up in a similar social media storm when a picture of a Blackpool suspect was released.

Luckily the Hollywood star took the comparison well, laughing it off and even posing in a similar image online.

The real thief, Abdulah Husseini, 36, was jailed for nine months for theft and fraud earlier this year.
