Police locate body of missing Snowy River swimmer

Police have located a body believed to be that of a swimmer who went missing in the Snowy Mountains on Monday.

Police were told a 56-year-old man entered the Snowy River upstream of a weir at Dalgety, 35km west of Jindabyne, about 11.45am on Monday, before witnesses lost sight of him.

When the man did not return to shore, emergency services were contacted.

Monaro Police District officers, NSW Ambulance, Fire and Rescue NSW, and SES members began searching for the man, with a drone also used.

A PolAir helicopter and police divers also conducted extensive searches in and around the river.

Just before 9am on Wednesday, police divers located a body in waters about 500 metres downstream from where the man was last seen.

While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of the missing man.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.
