Police launch probe after two men assaulted near Lanarkshire underpass

Police are appealing for witnesses after two men were assaulted in Rutherglen last night.

A 52-year-old male and a 26-year-old male were assaulted in Mill Street near to the underpass.

A police cordon was in place from just after 8pm until 11pm last night while officers handled the incident.

A source told Lanarkshire Live that the two men were “attacked” by a group of teenagers.

They added: “There was a group of teens hanging around outside Wetherspoons and they were making rude and offensive remarks to anyone who passed them.

“They have attacked an older man in the underpass, it looked like his injuries were quite serious.

"I'm not sure if he was alone, but it also looked like a younger man was also beaten up too.

“I’ve no idea what caused them to attack them but that area is getting worse.

“The underpass is becoming Rutherglen’s shame, the streets should be safe but instead people are scared to walk in the area.”

Emergency services attended and both the 52 and 26-year-old males were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries.

Their condition remains unknown.

Rutherglen police are now carrying out enquiries and appealing to the public for information.

Inspector Kevin Miller confirmed the attack with us, saying: “Officers are carrying out enquiries after a 52-year-old man and a 26-year-old man were assaulted in the Mill Street area of Rutherglen at 8.15pm on Monday, August, 23.

“They were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment."

Anyone with any information is asked to call cops on 101. Information can be left anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
