'Despicable' animal traps found in Paisley country park as cops hunt criminals

Police have appealed for help to track down criminals who have set animal snares in a beauty spot.

Officers recovered several snares from Gleniffer Braes Park in Paisley in recent weeks and described the illegal trapping as “despicable”.

A probe into the activity has been launched, with police making an appeal through Facebook.

Inspector Tracy Harkins said:”We are working closely with the park rangers and Renfrewshire Council to ascertain where the snares have been set and by whom.

“This is a despicable way of capturing and killing innocent animals.

“As yet we have had no reports of any animals affected by the traps but I’m sure it is only a matter of time.

“I would implore any member of the public who has information or knows the whereabouts of any such snares to contact Paisley Police."

Last month the Record told of an “urban hunter” who trained his dogs to rip apart badgers, foxes and deer.

was banned from keeping animals for 20 years.

Carter and his gang made horrifying videos that featured the animals squealing in agony as they fought for their lives.

At Greenock Sheriff Court , Sheriff Andrew McIntyre branded the crimes of the 19-year-old as “sickening” but he was spared jail on account of his age and previous good record.

The sheriff said: “It is disturbing that you were not sickened by any of this and, worse, that you took pleasure out of watching animals’ distress.”

As well as the animal ban, Carter was given a 225 Community Payback Order and put on a curfew from 11pm to 7am for six months.

He was also put on supervision for a year.

Carter was warned that he will be locked up if he breaches any of the stringent orders made against him.
