Police have launched a murder investigation after a man died days after being assaulted in a park in east London.

Steve Kennedy, 61, who lived in the area, died in hospital after sustaining a serious head injury from the attack in Plaistow Park, Met Police said.

Police were called to the scene at 11.35am on Thursday to reports of a man assaulted.

Mr Kennedy was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but died on Sunday. His family have been informed.

Homicide and Major Crime Command detectives have now launched a murder investigation into Mr Kennedy’s death.

A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Considine, who leads the investigation, said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the park at the time and who might have seen the incident or events leading up to it.

“Any information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could help us move forward with our investigation.”

Two men were arrested in connection with the assault prior to Mr Kennedy’s death, one of whom appeared in court on Saturday charged with grievous bodily harm.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the incident room on 020 8345 3865 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
