Police launch major investigation after critically injured baby found unresponsive in Gladstone home

The eight-month-old baby was rushed to Gladstone Hospital after being found unresponsive.

Police have launched an investigation into how an eight-month-old boy sustained critical head injuries at a central Queensland home in May.

The child was found non-responsive by emergency services at a home on Wilson Street, New Auckland on May 30.

He was taken to Gladstone Hospital but was later flown to Queensland Children's Hospital, where he has undergone multiple surgeries and remains in a serious condition.

Detective Acting Inspector Luke Peachey said police were "keeping an open mind as to how the baby suffered those injuries".

He said a major investigation into the incident has begun, including specialist detectives who have flown in from Brisbane.

"Detectives from Child Trauma Unit and Gladstone Protective Investigation Unit are now piecing together a timeline of events and are seeking public assistance to fully understand the circumstances leading up to the boy's hospitalisation," Detective Acting Inspector Peachey said.

"Investigators would like to speak to anyone who has had contact with the injured child or the family or have any knowledge in this matter that may assist."

He said any neighbours or anyone who has had contact with the family or child should come forward.

"If there's anything unusual that they haven't come forward to tell police about, or if there's anything at all that they do know, that's the time now that we're asking them to come forward," he said.
