Police launch investigation into death of soldier at Pembrokeshire Army firing range

Police have launched an investigation into the death of a solider at a west Wales tank range.

Welsh Guards sergeant Gavin Hillier died on Thursday in an incident at the Castlemartin base in Pembrokeshire. It is thought a "live fire" training exercise was taking place at the time.

The probe into his death is being led by Dyfed-Powys Police and also involves the Ministry of Defence and the Health and Safety Executive.

A police spokeswoman said: "An investigation has been launched into the death of a soldier at Castlemartin RAC Range following a military exercise. Dyfed-Powys Police were called to the site at just before 10.45pm on Thursday, March 4. Sadly, a man was pronounced dead shortly after. Our thoughts are with his family, who have been informed of the incident and are being supported by specialist officers.

"An investigation is underway led by Dyfed-Powys Police. Officers are liaising with the Health and Safety Executive and MoD."

A published Ministry of Defence firing notice shows "live firing" exercises - training with real ammunition and ordnance - have been carried out at the range every day this week.

Following the death, Sergeant Hillier's dad posted on Facebook that he had received a phone call that "will forever change my life".

He wrote: "My eldest son...was in a fatal accident in the army, the job he loved. Sleep tight and rest in peace son. I’m so proud of you. Goodnight and God bless. Love you’re heartbroken dad, xxx." [sic]

In 2017 two soldiers from the Royal Tank Regiment - Matthew Hatfield and Darren Neilson - were fatally wounded after an explosion and fire on their tank during another live-firing exercise at the range.

An inquest later concluded that the "main cause" of the incident was a hitherto undetected design flaw in the Challenger 2 tank.
