An investigation has been launched by police after two bodies were found in a shipping container in the New South Wales central tablelands town of Gulgong.

Emergency services were called to Goolma Road, Gulgong, at about 11am Saturday, following reports of a concern for welfare.

On arrival, officers from Orana-Mid Western police district found two bodies in a shipping container. They established a crime scene and have launched an investigation.

Gulgong is a gold rush town about half an hour north of Mudgee. It has a population of around 2,500 people.
