Police launch investigation after 'suspicious package' discovered at Haltwhistle station

An investigation is ongoing after a "suspicious package" was found at Haltwhistle station in Northumberland.

A bomb disposal team was called to the station after it is believed an unexploded wartime bomb was discovered near the train tracks, although this has not yet been confirmed.

The Northumberland station was evacuated and closed and Northern train services were unable to run between Carlisle and Hexham for more than two hours.

Some passengers were told they were unable to complete their journeys due to a "suspicious package" on the line.

Roads around the station were also closed while emergency services descended on the scene.

The B6322 in the town was shut between Station Road and Lanty's Lonnen.

Police were called to the train station just before 6pm on Thursday.

Fire crews and ambulances were also seen at the station, which was cordoned off.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said they were investigating whether any criminal offences had been committed.

"We received a report of a suspicious package at a business premises in Haltwhistle," he said.

"The premises was evacuated as a precaution. Experts from the bomb disposal unit attended the scene and disposed of the item as a precaution.

"Enquiries to establish if any criminal offences have been committed are ongoing."

The train line reopened just before 8.30pm but disruption was expected for the rest of the day.

A replacement bus service had been arranged between Hexham and Carlisle during the closure.
