Police launch investigation after car goes up in flames in Bothwell

Police have launched an investigation after a car was burnt out in Bothwell on Monday night.

Officers say they are treating the incident, which took place outside a property on Bellshill Road, near to the A725 and Raith roundabout, as suspicious.

The vehicle has been completely destroyed, with the fire also causing substantial damage to a nearby property.

No-one was hurt during the incident.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Officers were called to a report of a car on fire at an address in Bellshill Road, Bothwell, around 11.35pm on Monday, November 16, 2020.

“The fire, which is being treated as suspicious, was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“An investigation is at an early stage. Police are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area around this time to get in touch if they saw or heard anything suspicious by calling 101, quoting reference 3820 of November 16, 2020.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 11.35pm on Monday, November 16, to reports of a car fire on Bellshill Road, Bothwell, South Lanarkshire.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene to extinguish the fire which had also affected a nearby property.

“There were no reported casualties.

“Firefighters worked to make the area safe before leaving.”
