Police launch investigation after baby's body found in Welsh woodlands

Police have launched an investigation after the body of a baby was found in Welsh woodlands.

Officers are treating the death as "unexplained" after a member of the public made the chilling discovery on the afternoon of 29 January.

The body was dumped in woodlands next to the Imperial Park industrial estate, just off the M4 in Newport, South Wales.

A spokesman for Gwent police said: “We are currently treating the death as unexplained and a post-mortem examination will take place on Monday.”

Officers cordoned off a patch of woods and were combing through the undergrowth after the shocking discovery.

It is thought they are checking local hospital records in a bid to track down the baby’s mother.

A nearby worker, who did not wish to be named, told the Mail Online: “It is a real shock. There's been a lot of police activity and the area of small trees is taped off.

“It is terrible to think that some poor woman has given birth and this is where the baby had ended up.”

Police have yet to disclose the age or sex of the baby.
