Police launch investigation after 17-year-old girl is raped outside Leith church

Police have launched an investigation after a teenager was suffered a serious sexual assault outside a church in Edinburgh.

Officers have stated that "enquiries are underway" after the 17-year-old girl was raped in Leith.

According to police, the attack took place near the South Leith Parish Church on Constitution Street in the early hours of this morning.

Teams have remained at the scene after officers were called to the area at around 1am.

No further information is available, however Police Scotland have said they are working to establish the "full circumstances" of the incident.

A full investigation is now underway, with anyone with any relevant information urged to come forward.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police received a report of a serious sexual assault involving a 17-year-old girl at around 1am on Thursday, October 22 in the grounds of a church in the Leith area of Edinburgh.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances around the incident.”
