Police launch arson investigation after van fire in Stanley

An investigation is under way after a van fire in County Durham.

Emergency services were called to Scott Street, Stanley, in the early hours of Monday morning to reports of a van on fire.

A fire crew from High Handenhold attended the scene around 3.30am and left around half an hour later.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way.

A Durham Constabulary spokesman said: "At 3.35am on Monday, we were alerted by the fire service to a vehicle on fire in a car park in Scott Street, Stanley.

"We are treating the incident as a suspected case of arson and the investigation is continuing."

A spokeswoman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) said: “Reports of a car fire on Scott Street, Stanley came into CDDFRS control just before 3.30am.

"A crew from High Handenhold attended the scene and extinguished the fire, leaving just after 4.00am. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 0023 of March 22.
