Police launch appeal after woman's body found in Highlands river

Police are appealing for help to identify a woman whose body was recovered from a river in the Highlands.

Her body was spotted in the River Nairn at around 9am on Sunday before it was recovered a short time later near the harbour.

The woman is described as in her late 50s or early 60s, slim, with short grey hair and was wearing a dark-coloured Slazenger top.

Her body was seen in the water opposite the Caravan Park on Shambles Road.

Detective Inspector Peter MacKenzie said: "We are currently conducting a number of inquiries to identify the woman, establish the circumstances leading up to her death and trace her family.

"As part of this we are appealing to the public for help and would urge anyone that recognises the description to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained and a post-mortem will be carried out to establish the cause of death."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting incident number 1250 of December 8.
