Police killer Dale Cregan 'returned to a maximum security psychiatric hospital after bragging about cushy life'

Evil police killer Dale Cregan has been returned to a maximum security psychiatric hospital on Merseyside, it's been reported.

Cregan, 37, is said to have been recently escorted under armed guard 100 miles to Ashworth Hospital in Maghull.

Cregan was jailed for life in 2013 for a string of horrific attacks.

While fleeing police over two gangland murders, he lured Greater Manchester Police constables Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes to an address in Tameside after making a bogus report of a burglary.

When they arrived, he gunned them down before throwing a grenade onto their bodies.

Cregan, reports the Liverpool Echo, was moved out of top security Full Sutton prison in York back to the secure hospital.

According to reports, he had previously bragged of a 'cushy life' at Ashworth Hospital.

It is believed he has spent several brief spells in Ashworth before, being moved there in 2015 and remaining for around four years.

The drug dealer had been on the run after murdering gangland rivals Mark Short and his dad David Short when he murdered PCs Bone and Hughes.

After being told he would die behind bars, Cregan claimed to launch a hunger strike in jail.

He was eventually relocated to Ashworth - despite no known diagnosis of mental health issues - where it was reported he boasted about his workout regime and access to snooker and tennis.

According to the Echo, Cregan once wrote a letter to a pal from Ashworth in 2016, in which he boasted of making pizza without a knife, playing pool and getting 'ripped'.

He even wrote about 'paddling in a kayak' in a swimming pool during his last stint at the top security hospital, where Moors Murderer Ian Brady was held before his death.

Cregan wrote: "I'm good bro just smashing the gym and playing snooker you know how it goes.

"Been doin' pure circuits on the ward.

"You know you got your a**e kicked at snooker and tennis you had me at the kayaking tho bro (ha ha).

"It's not ideal but it beats sitting on the block miles from home innit bro.

"Gym, phone call and a visit and I'm happy brother."

An insider said of his return to Ashworth 'he's playing the game' to get away from tough Category A Full Sutton in North Yorkshire, which holds many of the country's most violent prisoners.

The serial killer was given a rare whole life order.

Ian Hanson, chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Federation, said after he was jailed: "I have no problem whatsoever with the thought of him staring through one eye at a locked cell door wondering what kind of life he is missing and after he has stopped being a drain on society he can rot in hell.

"Dale Cregan wanted to be a big man, a hero. He has completely failed to become anything like that.

"Contrast that with what Nicola and Fiona leave us. Their legacy is one of decency, humanity, compassion and public service and they will never be forgotten."

For Cregan to be transferred to hospital he would need the backing of at least two independent psychiatrists supporting his claim that he needs specialist care.

The Ministry of Justice refused to comment.
