Police 'keeping an open mind' into death of missing boy, 5, pulled from river

Police are "keeping an open mind" as they continue to investigate the death of a five-year-old boy whose body was discovered in a river yesterday morning.

The boy was found at the River Ogmore in Bridgend, Wales as officers are working around the clock "to establish the full circumstances of his death so that we can provide answers to his family".

Ch Insp Geraint White said there were a "lot of people in the local community who would like answers about what happened".

He said: "This is an extensive and sensitive investigation and many people have been affected by this death."

Dozens of officers including forensics teams and police divers have been scouring the playing field and paths leading from the boy's home to the River Ogmore, less than a quarter of a mile away.

Mr White added: "We would request that respect is extended to all those involved, and that people do not speculate about this incident on social media as this is an active investigation."

South Wales Police was called to a report of a missing child at 5.45 am on Saturday.

The boy was rushed to Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend where he sadly died.

One neighbour said: "I could hear the mum screaming for her son. She was shouting 'the back door was open' and calling for him.

"A short while later the old bill turned up and they've been here ever since."

His family was being supported by specially trained officers, police added.

Police are keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at or around 5.45am this morning who may have information about how the child ended up in the water.

Yesterday, Mr White said: "'We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or who has any information, to get in touch.

"We would ask the public not to speculate about this incident on social media as this is an active investigation.

"If you have any information that can help, please report this to us.

"Our thoughts are with the family and we are supporting them in every way we can.”

Anyone with information can phone 101 and use the reference number 2100268674.
