Police keep watch at Cardiff retail park as cars and young people gather again at scene of last week's 'meet'

More young people have gathered at a Cardiff retail park in Newport Road, for the second Sunday in a row.

Unlike the gathering last week, when WalesOnline was at the scene, it was reportedly quieter, with around 100 people chatting and a food van on site.

Two police cars were in attendance tonight at the Newport Rd retail area, where the car park of choice appeared to be Topps Tiles.

Last week around 60-70 cars were gathered near PC World at Newport Road Retail Park, Cardiff, revving their engines and 'drag racing' up and down along Newport Road, according to one passer-by.

One woman, who didn’t want to be named, said at the time: "I just drove past. There were well over 100 kids gathered there hanging around. It was pretty scary to be honest."

And another witness added: "More than 100 young people have gathered in the car park of PC World and Tops Tiles on Newport Road.

"What appears to be a car meet, I've seen about 60 cars, many of them modified, parked all over the car park and opposite. Young people between the ages of about 16 and 25 can be seen gathering around the main highway into Cardiff running across the busy six carriageway road."

It comes after scenes of 'hostility' in May as police faced crowd of hundreds at Cardiff's Culverhouse Cross retail park. You can read about that, here.

South Wales Police confirmed they were in attendance at the scene tonight.

A spokeswoman said: "Early this evening, South Wales Police attended two gatherings at car parks in Culverhouse Cross and Newport Road. A number of vehicles were at both locations but have since left.

"Officers continue to work with businesses to ensure measures are in place to prevent access to car parks when retails units are closed."
