Police join coastguard to bring man and woman to safety hours apart at South Shields coast

A man and a woman were brought to safety a matter of hours apart after concerns for their welfare were raised at the North East Coast.

Personnel for the South Shields Life Brigade first attended the scene in the Marsden Cliffs area of South Shields on Wednesday afternoon following a call out at 3.29pm after concerns were raised for a female.

The rescue operation took approximately 90 minutes and thankfully the female was successfully brought to safety with crews from Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat, Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust HART team all in attendance.

A spokesperson for the South Shields Life Brigade said: "The team were tasked to a multi agency incident in the Marsden area tonight. After approximately 90 minutes it was brought to a successful conclusion.

"Along with ourselves other Emergency services attending were Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat, Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust HART team all in attendance."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 3.15pm yesterday (Wednesday) police received a report of concern for a female at Marsden Cliffs in South Shields.

“Emergency services attended the scene alongside partner agencies where she was brought to safety.”

Then, for the second time that day, the South Shields Life Brigade were alerted to concerns for despondent male in the Marsden area at 9.58pm in the evening.

Alongside the brigade, a search was conducted by teams from Northumbria Police and Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team from Frenchmans to the Wharry. Thankfully, police confirmed that the man was found safe and well.

Representatives from the Force say the man was successfully located near to Coast Road.

A spokesperson for the South Shields Life Brigade said: "The team were tasked for a second time tonight to assist Police with a search for a despondent male.

"A comprehensive search was conducted along the coastline from Frenchmans to the Wharry, while the teams were conducting their search patterns we received information that he had been located by Police safe and well. Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team were also in attendance."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 9.30pm yesterday (Wednesday) police received a report of concern for the welfare of a man in the Marsden area of South Shields.

“Emergency services were deployed to the area alongside partner agencies and located the man safe and well near to Coast Road.”
