Police issue warning to drivers as they deal with FIVE motorway smashes in heavy rain

Drivers are being urged to take more care in the rain as police deal with five crashes on Greater Manchester's motorways.

Officers have been called out to collisions on the M6, M60 and M66 motorways this afternoon (December 30).

North West Motorway Police says all five crashes have been caused by aquaplaning.

Two collisions have taken place between junctions three and four of the M66 in Bury, while two have taken place on the M6 between junctions 26 and 27 near Wigan.

Police are also dealing with a fifth crash between junctions 24 and 23 of the M60, in Tameside.

In a tweet telling drivers about the five crashes, North West Motorway Police is urging other motorists to take care in today's wet weather.

A spokesperson for North West Motorway Police said: "We are currently dealing with the following RTCs that have been caused by aquaplaning.

"Please slow down and drive to the conditions."

One lane was closed on each road following the crashes this afternoon.

Traffic is now coping well on all three of the M6, M60 and M66 motorways, according to the Inrix traffic monitoring system.

One lane is also currently closed on the M58 westbound near Wigan, between the Orrell Interchange and junction five for Skelmersdale, after a crash involving two cars.
