Police issue warning over smoke alarm scammer in Helensburgh

Police are hunting a bogus caller pretending to be a workman checking smoke alarms.

Officers in Helensburgh were made aware of the incident in Johnson Court in the town involving the man, thought to be around 21 years old.

He is described as being 5ft 4in tall of small/stocky build with black hair and was wearing a black jacket with black trousers.

A police spokesperson said: “If you believe doorstep criminals are operating in your area call police now on 101 (always dial 999 in an emergency).

“We would remind anyone, and particularly elderly members of the community – if anyone comes to your door, always ask for identification.

“Always close and lock your door while you contact the company or the police in order to check they are genuine before allowing anyone access to your home. Use your door chain to ensure they cannot gain entry until you are satisfied with their identity.”
