Western Australian police have issued a warning over suspected hallucinogenic lollipops which they fear are being distributed in the South West region.

The ABC understands that a teenager ingested a suspected drug-laced lollipop, and a source said their parents alerted the police after they "wigged out".

Police have not confirmed the age of the person affected but issued the warning on social media this morning and said the contraband was believed to contain an illicit substance.

Police said testing is underway to see if the lollipops contained illicit drugs.

Police speak out

At a press conference this afternoon, Acting Inspector Jeramy Davies said police were made of aware of concerns on Monday after a person became ill after they ingested a lollipop.

"It was reported that the person showed signs they had consumed an illicit drug or substance, " he said.

"This isn't something we've seen in the South West before.

"We just wanted to put a warning out to be vigilant that these substances are out there.

Inspector Davies would not confirm the name of the town in the South West where the incident took place, but urged people to keep an eye out across the region.

"They haven't been found all over the South West," he said.

"If you're a parent be vigilant. We're not sure exactly where they have come from … we are looking into that.

"If anyone has any they can hand them in to any local police station."

Consumption warning

Inspector Davies said the incident should serve as a reminder for people to be extremely careful about what they ingest.

Inspector Davies urged anyone with more information to come forward to police.
