Police issue warning after people flouted social distancing rules 'to have a chat' at a park

Police have issued a warning after people flouted social distancing rules at a country park.

Officers said they received complaints about people from different households meeting up 'for a chat' at Pennington Flash Country Park in Leigh on Thursday.

Play areas, car parks and visitor facilities at the popular beauty spot were closed last month after crowds of visitors descended on it.

But some are still travelling from afar and parking on nearby roads.

Greater Manchester Police  posted a warning on Facebook detailing examples of people who seem to be ignoring the current guidelines.

They said they had come across people who had travelled to Pennington Flash from Warrington, Swinton, Bolton and Newton-le-Willows.

Current government guidelines state that exercise should be done as close to home as possible, and people should avoid meeting up with others from another household.

GMP's Leigh, Atherton and Hindley team posted on Facebook: "Today, after complaints were raised, patrols have attended Pennington Flash Country park, and spoke to people who had driven there from, N le W, Warrington, Swinton, and Bolton.

"Also people who don't live together, who had met up in separate cars, then got into one car to have a chat.

"I know that it's difficult not to see loved ones, or to be deprived of travelling to exercise in somewhere as appealing as PF Country Park, but these are the guidelines set by the government.

"Exercise as close to home as possible, and do not meet up or go out with others not in the same house hold.
