Police issue warning after more than 20 homes targeted in spate of car thefts across Cardiff in recent weeks

Police have warned people across Cardiff and Penarth to be vigilant after more than 20 homes have been targeted by burglaries in recent weeks.

South Wales Police say they are investigating a number of incidents in Penarth, Sully and Wenvoe where car keys and cars have been stolen.

More than 20 homes, including some in Cardiff, have been targeted in the last two weeks and police believe the same individual or individuals are responsible.

They say they are gaining quick entry through unlocked doors during the evening and night-time and making off with whatever is nearby – generally car keys and then the owner’s car.

Inspector Stuart McDean, based at #Penarth Police Station, said: “While delivering crime prevention leaflets in Penarth, PCSOs have been checking for insecure premises and have come across a number of unlocked front doors with car keys left on the side, in easy reach.

“The occupiers were informed and grateful for the advice.

"Over the coming days officers from different departments including neighbourhood policing and roads policing will continue with both high-visibility and plain-clothed patrols to prevent further burglaries.”

Officers are asking people to make sure doors are locked and car keys are well hidden and any CCTV is on and working.

Detective Inspector Grant Wilson, who is leading the investigation into the burglaries, said: “Enquiries are ongoing to identify and locate those responsible for these recent burglaries, but in the meantime I’d like to stress to residents just how important it is that their belongings, particularly car keys, are stored safely – even while in their own home.”

Anybody who has noticed any suspicious behaviour or vehicles are urged to report it to police on social media, via email on SWP101@south-wales.police.uk or by phoning 101.
