Police issue warning after lorry smashes into broken down car on M1

Police have issued a warning to people to get out of cars that break down after a crash between a lorry and a Volvo.

Officers made the appeal after they told how a HGV "failed to see" the broken down car in lane one and crashed into it in the early hours of the morning.

A tweet from Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said: "M1 South J29 to J28 overnight. Volvo breaks down in lane one. Lorry fails to see it and react in time and drives into it.

"Good job there was no one sat in the back. Break down in a live lane? Get out, quickly, call 999."

Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit said on Twitter the crash happened on the M1 southbound between Junction 29 for Chesterfield and Junction 28 for Alfreton, reports DerbyshireLive.

It is in a section of the M1 that is smart motorway.

Shocking images released show the back of the black Volvo completely caved-in, as well as significant damage to the blue lorry.

Officers said that anyone sitting in the back of the Volvo could have been seriously injured or even killed.

They have also warned drivers if they break down on a live lane of a motorway or a major road to get out quickly and call 999 as soon as possible.
